The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences seeks to train middle-level laboratory professionals who have the required knowledge and skills to ensure accurate and safe diagnostic procedures at the laboratory, and have the capacity to undertake vigorous research to ascertain the causes, prevention and treatment of diseases. 

HND in Medical Laboratory Sciences programme

The HND Medical Laboratory Sciences is a three-year full-time programme of study. The programme is practically based, whose body of knowledge is grounded in the basic sciences and also supported by some core clinical courses and internship in hospitals. The programme produces graduates who can efficiently collect, process and analyze biological samples of patients for accurate diagnosis of disease.

  • Parasitology
  • Histology
  • Chemical Pathology
  • Microbiology
  • Virology
  • Histo-pathology

Entry Requirement

WASSCE Applicant

Passes in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) Core subjects: English, Mathematics and Integrated science not exceeding D7, and three (3) Science Electives: Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Physics not exceeding C6.

Mature Applicant

  • Must be 25years and above.
  • Must have a pure science background from ‘O’ & ‘A’ level or SSSCE&WASSCE.
  • Applicants must pass an entrance examination.

The Medical Laboratory Science programme adequately prepares students for exciting, challenging and dynamic part-time and full-time careers in the laboratories of clinics, hospitals, forensic and veterinary departments. Professionals in this field are also in high demand future molecular biotechnology laboratories.

Career opportunities also exist in public and private research institutions in Ghana such as Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Narcotics Control Authority etc.
